Industry leaders from across the Region will join with global development partners to discuss poverty and inequality in the Caribbean; micro, small and medium enterprise development; and transforming the region' maritime port services, during the 46th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) (#CDBBoG46) in Jamaica from May 18-19, 2016. Under the meeting theme, 'Economic Transformation for Growth and Poverty Reduction,' the Bank will release three major studies entitled, 'The Changing Nature of Poverty and Inequality in the Caribbean: New Issues, New Solutions;' 'Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development in the Caribbean: Towards a New Frontier;' and 'Towards Greater Efficiency: The Transformation of the Caribbean Maritime Port Services Industry.' The Bank will host three seminars during #CDBBoG46 to explore the findings of these studies, with input from panellists drawn from civil society, public and private sector. On Wednesday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. (-5 GMT), panellists will discuss the topic, 'The Changing Nature of Poverty and Inequality in the Caribbean: New Issues, New Solutions.' Presenters including Dr. Ralph Henry, Chairman, Kairi Consultants, Trinidad and Tobago; Dr. Anthony George, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, St. Lucia; and Professor Andrew Downes, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Planning and Development, University of West Indies. The panellists will examine the transformative shifts in policies, approaches, strategies and institutions that are required to speed up poverty reduction in the Caribbean, and offer new and innovative solutions to address poverty and promote shared prosperity. Later that evening at 4:00 p.m. (-5 GMT), the focus will turn to 'Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development in the Caribbean: Towards a New Frontier,' during which panelists will see to provide practical policy recommendations for MSME expansion and development. Panellists are Milverton Reynolds, Managing Director, Development Bank of Jamaica; Daniel Arthurton, Adviser, Eastern Caribbean Securities Regulatory Commission (ECSRC), Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB); and Dr. Arnold McIntyre, Deputy Division Chief, Caribbean Division I, Western Hemisphere Department, International Monetary Fund. The following day, Thursday, May 19 at 9:15 a.m. (-5 GMT), panellists Mike Maura, President and CEO, Arawak Port Development Ltd.; Darwin Telemaque, Port Manager, Antigua; and Beverley Williamson, Senior Vice President, Business Management and Special Projects, Port Authority of Jamaica will seek to identify critical drivers of inefficiency in the Region' main ports; and investment requirements for port development during the seminar on the topic, 'Towards Greater Efficiency: The Transformation of the Caribbean Maritime Port Services Industry.' Prior to the seminars, Rachel Kyte, Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for SE4ALL, will be the keynote speaker at the 17th William G. Demas Memorial Lecture. Ms. Kyte will speak on the topic, “Last Mile First - Building a Cleaner More Just Prosperity in Response to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement," at the Tuesday, May 17, 2016 lecture.
