VYBZING 2013

2013 Theme: “Road Safety: Save a Life, Save a Future”

VYBZING is the name of CDB’s Youth Outreach Programme which has over the years reached over 500 young people in CDB’s member countries. It is a platform for youth engagement with emphasis on youth empowerment and participation in the development process. Each year, the youth address a topic that impacts on youth development. This year, we turned our focus to the topic of road safety.

Road safety is a major public health concern and a leading cause of death and injury in many of CDB’s Borrowing Member Countries. This translates into significant impacts associated with lost, productivity and increased vulnerability to poverty among all segments of society, including the youth.

VYBZING St. Lucia Youth Forum

From May 15 – 17, 2013, 29 youth ages 16 – 29 from across St. Lucia gathered at the Bay Gardens Inn to discuss the issue of road safety, with the aim of creating a Youth Declaration for Road Safety.

During the interactive three-day session held under the theme, “Road Safety: Save a Life, Save a Future,” participants identified factors which place young people at increased risks for road related deaths and injuries, and identified areas road safety decision-makers in the Caribbean should focus upon to mitigate these factors. They also learnt project management skills to scope their own projects to address the issue of youth and road safety in St. Lucia.

On the final day of the Forum, participants crafted a Youth Declaration for Road Safety for St. Lucia, which was signed by all participants. The signed declaration was presented to the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) Board of Governors during the Closing Ceremony of the Annual Meeting on May 23, 2013.

The 2013 VYBZING Youth Forum was conducted in collaboration with the Government of St. Lucia’s Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, and was facilitated by Youth For Road Safety (YOURS), an international youth-led and youth-oriented non-governmental organisation focused on young road safety.
