CDB Support Transforms Learning Environment for Students with Special Needs in Jamaica
KINGSTON, Jamaica: Students with special educational needs are set to benefit from an enhanced classroom at The Mico University College Child Assessment and Research in Education (CARE) Centre with support from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB / the Bank) and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF). The initiative was delivered in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information.
The upgraded space features interactive learning resources and specialised teaching tools designed to improve student engagement, strengthen learning outcomes, and provide tailored support for children with diverse learning needs. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to create more inclusive, accessible, and effective learning environments for children and families across Jamaica.
CDB's support reflects a commitment to advancing human development and ensuring that all learners, including those with special educational needs, have access to quality education and the tools required to reach their full potential.
Representing the Bank at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mr. Steve Lawrence, Advisor, CDB, emphasised the importance of learning environments that empower every child to succeed.
“This investment reflects an inclusive education system, where ‘education for all’ is not a slogan – but a demonstrated reality for the students and teachers who will together thrive in a space that will translate ambition to achievement,” said Mr. Lawrence.
Senator Dr. the Honourable Dana Morris Dixon, Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, highlighted the transformative impact of the upgraded facility on students.
“Today, because of the work of CDB and JSIF we have this beautiful facility here. Children with autism are going to be able to get specialised care in a much nicer space,” said Senator Dr. the Honourable Minister Dixon.
By supporting innovative teaching and learning approaches, the improvements will strengthen the assessment, intervention, and educational support services provided by the Mico CARE Centre, a recognised centre of excellence in child assessment, research, and support for learners with special educational needs and developmental challenges.
Through strategic partnerships and investments in education, CDB continues to support initiatives that promote equity, inclusion, and improved learning outcomes across the Caribbean, helping to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to national and regional development.
