Jamaica and Barbados Win Major Prizes at Digital Jam 3.0

Published on
An App that can map crime hotspots, one that can help to make commuting easier and one that can assist doctors and patients were the big winners of the Digital Jam 3.0 competition which culminated in Jamaica on Sunday March 2, at a conference in Kingston, Jamaica. The top prize went to one of the teams from Jamaica for CrimeBot, an app which creates a social community of watchers to map crime hotspots. An App developed by a Barbadian team took the top prize in the Expert Developers category. MediRevu will help doctors and patients suffering from non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and obesity to keep track of appointments, treatments and patients' health conditions. In the category of Stunning Beginners, another team from Jamaica won with Route 876, an App that will help people get around on the public transportation system in Jamaica by providing route details, timetables and maps. Jamaican developers also won the Game Changers category with the App Pan Chicken Dash, while the App Wizzners, developed by a team from Dominica, was voted the best App not to win a prize. Wizzners teaches young children how to count. More than 160 Apps, submitted by 50 teams from Jamaica, Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, Antigua, Trinidad & Tobago and St. Kitts, made it to the finals of the competition. The participation of the Barbados developers and those from the OECS was facilitated by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). During the conference, which was dubbed Get up, Start-up, the finalists had a chance to network with key experts from the Silicon Valley, and learn from leading tech companies how to find online work opportunities or get funding for e-business ideas. All finalists will be offered follow-up trainings to turn their App into viable and monetizable products and services. Digital Jam 3.0 is an initiative of the Government of Jamaica, the World Bank Group, the Government of Canada and key partners including CDB, the Development Bank of Jamaica, the OECS Secretariat, Microsoft, LIME, Google, the Jamaica Gleaner, JAMPRO, InfoDev and other corporate entities.
