Professor Clive Thomas to Deliver Sixth William G. Demas Memorial Lecture

Professor Clive Thomas, Director of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Guyana, will deliver the Sixth William G. Demas Memorial Lecture. The title of Prof. Thomas' address will be The Development Glass: Half Empty or Half Full - Perspectives on Caribbean Development. The lecture is scheduled for May 17, 2005, at the Sea Breeze Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana. Prof. Thomas has had a distinguished career as a University Professor and Researcher. He has held Visiting Professorships in Africa (University of Dar-es-Salaam), Canada (Visiting Distinguished Professor at the Norman Patterson School of International Relations), USA (Leonard O'Connor Professor, Colgate University), and the West Indies (George Beckford Professor in Caribbean Economy). He is the author/co-author of 15 books/research monographs and over 140 academic articles and contributions to books. He has presented invited papers to a similar number of academic conferences, symposia, and seminars. Having served as a member of numerous Boards, Committees, and Expert Groups dealing with development issues, Prof. Thomas is well qualified to address the topic which he has chosen. He was Co-ordinator of the Regional Programme of Monetary Studies, a member of the Commonwealth Group of Experts on the Changing World Economy and North-South Relations (1990-1991) and the UNDP Group of Experts on Designing the Future: South-South Cooperation in Science and Technology, 2000. He has served as a member of the WHO/PAHO Advisory Committee on Health Research, 1996-1999, and was appointed in 2002 to the United Nations Secretary-General's Millennium Project Task Force to monitor the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. Prof. Thomas was recently appointed a member of the Caribbean Commission on Health and Development and of UNCTAD's High Level Expert Group on Commodity-Dependent Countries. He is also on the Editorial Board of several academic journals. The recipient of a number of national and academic honours, Prof. Thomas was also awarded the first Distinguished Professor title at the University of Guyana by the Council of the University. The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) inaugurated the lecture series in 2000 in honour of the Bank's second President, William Gilbert Demas, a distinguished economist and champion of regional integration. Mr. Demas served as President of CDB from 1974 to 1988.
