Summary

How effectively are multilateral development banks (MDBs) leveraging shareholder capital to address today's development challenges? The newly released MDB Comparison Report 2026 highlights the continued strength, stability, and resilience of the world's leading MDBs, even amid rising geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, and higher energy costs. Compiled by the Global Risk and Finance Forum (GRaFF), the report compares the financial performance, capital adequacy, liquidity management, risk frameworks, and creditworthiness of 15 major MDBs, providing valuable insights into how these institutions are expanding their development impact while maintaining strong financial foundations.

The report shows that MDBs continue to maintain robust capital and liquidity positions, supported by strong credit ratings and prudent risk management practices. Collectively, these institutions have strengthened their balance sheets, accumulated approximately US$424 billion in equity capital, and generated significant retained earnings that support future lending and investment activities. MDBs are also increasingly adopting innovative approaches to capital management, including risk-transfer mechanisms and updated capital adequacy frameworks, enabling them to stretch scarce development resources further while safeguarding long-term financial sustainability. Recent enhancements to rating agency methodologies by S&P Global, Moody’s, and Fitch Ratings have further recognized the resilience of the MDB business model and the value of preferred creditor treatment in supporting strong portfolio performance.

For policymakers, development practitioners, investors, and stakeholders across the Caribbean and beyond, the report offers an important benchmark for understanding how MDBs are financing sustainable development, climate resilience, infrastructure, private sector growth, and social progress. While institutions differ significantly in mandate, business model, geographic focus, and risk appetite, the findings underscore a common theme: MDBs remain a dependable source of development financing and countercyclical support during periods of global stress. Explore the full report to compare financial metrics, lending approaches, liquidity policies, and capital management practices across the global MDB community.
