The Caribbean Prepares for a Geothermal Revolution

The Caribbean is embracing geothermal energy, and the Caribbean Development Bank is leading the charge. Dominica’s first 10 MW geothermal plant, set to launch in early 2026, will supply over 60% of the island’s electricity and cut reliance on costly diesel imports. This milestone was made possible through a $34.8 million financing package arranged by CDB, with support from partners including the Green Climate Fund and Canada.

CDB President Daniel Best emphasised that geothermal development strengthens economic resilience while reducing vulnerability to external shocks. Beyond Dominica, CDB is backing exploration in Nevis through an innovative contingent grant model that mitigates risk without adding to debt burdens. These efforts position geothermal as a game-changer for the region’s clean energy future.
