CDB Annual Meeting Seminars to Feature Leading Industry Experts

Climate change professionals, economists and development partners from across the globe will gather to discuss transitioning to a green economy and the use of public-private sector partnerships (PPPs) to spur socioeconomic growth in the Caribbean, during the 44th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in Guyana from May 28-29, 2014. On Wednesday, May 28 at 1:50 p.m. Eastern Caribbean Time (ECT), panellists including Mr. Richard Cabello, PPP Expert, Latin America and the Caribbean, International Finance Corporation, World Bank Group, Washington; Mr. Gemel Sobers, Sector Specialist, Sovereigns and Infrastructure, CIBC First Caribbean Investment Bank, Grand Cayman; Mr. Ivan Anderson, Managing Director, National Road Operating Construction Company Limited, Jamaica; Mr. Winston Brassington, Managing Director, National Investment Company, Guyana; and Mr. Carl Howell, Economist, CDB, will discuss the topic, ‘Public-Private Partnerships in the Caribbean: Building on Early Lessons.' The seminar will consider cases studies and the experiences of other multilateral institutions, concentrating on design and implementation issues, as well as lessons learnt. The event will also serve as a forum to identify priority policy actions that should be taken by Regional governments, with the support of CDB, to improve PPP usage and enhance related development outcomes. The following day, Thursday, May 29 at 10:30 a.m. ECT, the topic, ‘New Paradigm for Caribbean Development: Transitioning to a Green Economy,' will focus largely on the exploration of options for greening Caribbean economies in a variety of sectors. An additional goal is to contribute to knowledge about, and the understanding of the fundamental requirements for transitioning to a green economy in the Caribbean and the attendant implications for policy and institutional arrangements. Panellists include Mr. Thomas Scheutzlich, Director, Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme; Mr. Ralph Williams, Chief Executive Officer, Williams Industries Inc., Barbados; Mr. Christopher Brown, Project Coordinator, Energy, Development Bank of Jamaica and CDB's Energy Policy Consultant, Mr. Joseph Williams. Prior to the seminars, Ms. Héla Cheikhrouhou, Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), will be the keynote speaker the 15th William G. Demas Memorial Lecture on May 27, 2014 at the Pegasus Hotel, Georgetown. Both seminars will be streamed live via the Annual Meeting microsite, www.caribank.org/44th-annual-meeting/live.
