Day 2 of VYBZING Youth Forum Project Focused

Published on
The key elements which comprise the project management cycle and how they can be used to scope and implement road safety based projects was the focus of yesterday's VYBZING Youth Forum session. The 26 registered participants used the information learnt to scope their own ‘real life' projects for St. Lucia. Participants identified road safety problems in St. Lucia and explore and identified a range of project ideas to address the issues. They were then placed in groups to formulate a plan for their chosen project. Each group was required to pitch their plan to a panel of judges who provided feedback and tips. The judges were Youth for Road Safety's (YOURS), Director, Mr. Floor Lieshout; Chief Transport Officer, Ms. Lenita Joseph and CDB's Operations Officer (EID), Mr. Glen McCarvell. Group 1's presentation titled, ‘See a Safer City, focused on better road signage, while Group 2 looked at a safe driver rewards program with ‘Safe Driver' branded bumper stickers. Group 2 even prepared a catchy slogan as part of their message, "Eyes on the Road, Hands on the Wheel, Mind on my Driving." Group 3 pitched the idea of an incentivised driving etiquette programme targetting minibus drivers. Group 4's project titled, ‘Community Awareness in Road Safety (CARS)' focused on changing the community's attitudes about road safety. Mr. Lieshout stressed to participants the important of community involvement, "The community should be given the opportunity to participate in all stages of the project. Both persons affected directly and indirectly." Student, Ms. Lyncia Antoine described the Forum as ‘very informative.' "I have a presentation to make at school and I could not decide on a topic, now I know I will present on road safety. The project management cycle information and tips shared will be very useful in student life and professionally," she said. Participant, Mr. Nadge Augustin, Senior Field Officer, National Youth Council, described the Forum as timely. "The statistics for St. Lucia speak for themselves. Road safety is an area which we perhaps have not paid close enough attention to so this exercise in very timely in equipping the age group most impacted by road traffic injuries with the knowledge and tools needed to address those factors which put them at increased risk."
